The Dead and Alive Body

19:43 May 18 2008
Times Read: 678

Three days ago, I visited Kostnice, the Sedlec Ossuary otherwise known as The Bone Church. Yesterday I visited the Prague National Musem, and both experiences gazing upon human skeletons got me thinking. Thinking things that I am struggling to put into words, but it is a feeling that can only be imagined when in such a place as the Bone Church. 40000 human skeletons decorate the room, and in four corners there are massive piles of skulls and what appeared to be femurs. The most mind boggling part of it was considering that each one was once a human. A person with thoughts and a life, with flesh and a brain who walked and talked like the rest of us. This is where the part comes that I cannot explain. Looking upon a skeleton and considering this, I started asking myself outloud, "what is the body?".

A shell for our soul perhaps, as we go from one part of our spiritual exsistance to another. But then, do we have a soul or are we just a complex brain with connections, that is what it is based on what has been put into it during our years alive?

So I got to wondering, what are we really? Have we a soul, or are we just a working body with a working brain? With all my study on the human brain combined with my viewing so many real long dead skeletons, I am beginning to question my every spiritual belief.

So, what is the body? What is the difference between a living and dead body, the lack of an internal spirit, or simply the lack of functionality?
